Various Types Of Thermal Transfer Ribbon

The invention of printers made conveyance of information much easier and faster. Today, there are very many different types of printers that are used to print on different kinds of media. The various types of printers also use different technologies to achieve their purpose. One important type of printer is the thermal transfer printer. The working of this printer depends on application of heat to resin, wax, or wax-resin thermal transfer ribbon to produce images on various materials.

Normally, heat is applied by the thermal print head. This in turn liquefies wax or resin on to the paper or label surface. The effect is the creation of the desired image. In existence are a number of ribbon types and all have varying features. This makes them ideal for a number of applications. The first type of ribbons is the resin-enhance wax ribbons. This one is also referred to as the full wax and is usually coated with wax-based ink. This usually makes it to melt at a low temperature. Given its qualities, it is the most common type and it finds a lot of use on coated and uncoated paper stock. The durability of the image produced is much lower. Full wax ribbons are also very cheap and can be bought easily from retail stores, malls, and home depots among many other places.

The second class of ribbons is called wax-resin ribbons. This product is a hybrid of wax and resin-based resins. They have a moderate melting temperature. The images created from these ribbons are sharp and clear. The images can also be created on a wide variety of materials. Extensive research and testing of these products have been done to prove their abilities.

Wax resin ribbons are ideal for printing both standard thermal transfer and waterproof labels. The images are sufficiently resistant against temperature and moisture variations, and occasional rough handling. The cost of these ribbons is moderate and are ideal for labels for shelves, barcode, shipping and pharmaceutical prescription.

Pure resin is applied to make full resin ribbons. They have much higher melting temperatures. On melting, they dissolve into the material on which the printing is being done. With this, an extremely lasting finish is created. Normally, the quality of the end product is very high. Therefore, a person needs to ensure that the situation calls for use of this material in order to use it. Or else, it may be a needless overkill and waste of resources.

Full resin ribbons are the most expensive of the three types of ribbons. Similarly, they are the most durable. Their durability makes them suitable for use on synthetic stocks and other non-paper applications. It is recommendable for use on garment or textile labels, flexible packaging, automotive labels, and very sensitive chemicals and medical applications.
