Strengths And Flaws Of A Horizontal Directional Drilling

By Janet Moore

In this world, the economy had progressed and technologies became advanced. You could really observe it by observing your city. Tall buildings were made. Different transportations with nice features were created. And many infrastructures were being built. As for that, it really tells that engineering field had absolutely improved. Many techniques are applied by the builders to construct roads, bridges, tunnels and etc. They may also use rock and dirt directional drilling.

Technology of drilling had begun long ago. Around 2000 BC, it was the Chinese who first started to use this to drill wells. They used cable tool procedure to generate salt water. As the demand of oil began to rise in the mid 19th century, the application of this technology had advanced especially now the world had entered the modern era. Many oil industries are now rising. As a result, this practice is needed.

HDD or Horizontal Directional Drilling is the practice of piercing a well from the exterior to a subsurface area just on top of target gas or oil reservoir. The technique is now modernized unlike the traditional methods before. Moreover, it became really useful for installations of water, gas, and electricity in industries. On the other hand, it also contains some advantages and disadvantages.

The good thing about using HDD on construction is it does not disrupt the land or the surface while it burrows holes so builders can install some pipes and cables. In that case, the work is much cleaner and faster, causing the builders to save some time and also the result is much quicker. Because of that, it became an ideal technique for installing gas, water and sewers.

Traffics are usually the reason why the mood of some persons is ruined. And traffic sometimes occurs when there are road constructions. By utilizing this drilling method, it could reduce the problem of traffics because engineers will not require some permits from the government because the work can do below the road.

For those who dislike having their construction project always delayed, this technique will be their ideal choice. Projects tend to delay because of the poor weather conditions. But HDD will mend that situation for it can still function under that condition. As a result, its flexibility is much higher for it could be installed in any places.

Nevertheless, HDD still has its own flaws. The common one is weight material sag or Barite sag. With that condition, it cause poor logging instruments, has some difficulties in sticking pipes or cementing and has no control on wells. The process of this may also be limited the land or soil contains some rocks or cobble. For some people, HDD is quite costly as it will require some special crews and equipment.

The technique is really useful especially for economic growth. However, it gives some disadvantage to the environment. This human activity can affect the wildlife because of its noise pollution. The oil spills can cause dangerous health effects to animals and even humans. The toxic chemicals released by explosion of pipelines and wells could cause pollution to air and water.

Indeed HDD is quite beneficial. You cannot deny how it can help improve the economy. Nonetheless, humans should still be careful and aware of its effects to environment. There should be balance whenever they utilize that technique.
