When starting a new sewing or quilt project, you get excited to go to the fabric store and search for the perfect piece among all the different ones available in the store. Handling and viewing all the many types and colors of fabric give a simple joy that is an important part of the project. You may think that online discount fabrics can't offer the same, but in fact they can.

Receiving a box in the mail with an assortment of fresh, new fabrics can be as exciting as shopping in a store. It can be addicting shopping online. All the exciting, bright colors and the numerous patterns stir the imagine for what can be done. Some even encourage to match it to a special piece of fabric in your stash.

Buying from an online store is often much less expensive than that from the store. They operate with little overhead, so can price their product lower. Even if you have to pay shipping, it is usually still less. Many have free shipping, at least from time to time. Special promotions often are offered for free or low-cost shipping, making them even cheaper.

This method of shopping is more convenient for a number of reasons. One is that you can shop in your pajamas. There is no need to get dressed and prepare for a shopping trip. Just open up your computer and go. There are search terms at most of the websites that make shopping so much easier. Your are able to search by price per yard, type of fabric, usage, color and other terms you may be interested in buying.

You have to shop several stores when shopping in person, often travelling to several before you find what you want, at the least price. This is not necessary when shopping on your computer. Just a click and you can move between stores. It is even possible to get a list of websites by entering a term and getting a list of sites to try.

Several precautions should be observed before shopping online. Choose a site that offers samples of their product if at all possible. Sometimes they are not free, but it is very cheap to get small square samples. Make sure the site is specific about shipping and handling charges, designating how much each is.

Make sure that they have a return policy that allows you to return an unwanted purchase. If they don't allow it, be sure they list that on their site and be prepared to have to keep what you bought even if it turns out not to be what you wanted. If there is no return allowed, buy a very small amount and check it out before buying a larger amount.

In the interest of security, it is imperative to check that the site state that they do not store credit card numbers or personal information. It is important as well that they post their customer service information in the event you need to contact them about any problems with your order. At the least, they should give an email address, and preferably also a phone number and physical address.
