Looking For A Replacement Turntable Stylus

By Rebecca Bell

Many music fans will own a collection of vinyl records and they use a record deck to play them on. CD's and mp3 players are now the most popular format and many turntable components are becoming much harder to find. When you are looking for a replacement turntable stylus there are a few places where you can find a suitable one.

The needle is a vital part of a record player as it picks up the sound from grooves in the disc to make the sound that you hear. When a needle is worn or damaged it will produce an inferior sound and it will scratch the surface of the vinyl. There are different types of needle and it is imperative to find a suitable replacement when you are buying one.

A reputable audio store in your local area is a great place to locate and buy a needle for your turntable. Many stores can be found on the high street with experienced staff who will advise you and help with your search. If they do not have a compatible needle in stock they can usually order one from the factory for you.

The internet is a useful place to purchase new styluses and there are many reliable online suppliers. You will have to spend some time browsing pages of stock and it is a good idea to have the serial number or manufacturer of your existing needle. You will usually pay less when buying online as a web based retailer will have much lower overheads than other retailers and they can sell for lower prices.

If an audio dealer or internet retailer cannot help you can try an established internet auction site. Many of the web based auctions will have styluses listed with a color picture and description which are waiting for the best offer or highest bid. If you are not sure about an item you can always contact the seller and ask for more information before bidding.

If you have older audio equipment you may have difficulty in finding a replacement needle but there are a few options available to you. Searching your local junk stores or charity stores can often produce results as they will often sell old turntables. Contacting an electrical engineer may also be helpful and they may be able to adapt your deck so that a newer stylus can be fitted.

If you know the maker of your stylus it may be worth calling them as many will sell you a replacement. The manufacturers may stock needles that they have produced and will sell them direct to the general public. If they do not have one that is compatible they may recommend a dealer where you will find your stylus.

Record player needles are fragile and they need to be cared for to avoid damage. Unless you fit the needle to your deck immediately, it should be stored in its original packaging until you are ready to use it. Retain your purchase bill which will be needed if you need to exchange or return the stylus to the supplier.
