Locating A Company For Global Shipping

By Patrick Wagner

From time to time, you may need to send documents or parcels to other countries by using a carrier service. When looking for a company to handle your global shipping needs, there are some important things for you to consider. There are many companies trading that specialize in sending items overseas and a little homework is needed.

Many things can be sent via courier to a lot of destinations and these include documents, small packages, bulky crates and even animals. When selecting a suitable carriage company, it is essential that you try to get the best price by getting a quote from different companies. The fees you will be charged are going to vary depending on a couple of factors.

Shipping firms generally charge customers by the volume or weight of the item to be sent and you will need to calculate these. Small packages and paperwork can often be shipped using fixed prices and large heavier packages are charged per kilo. All of your items will need to be securely packaged prior to collection or drop off. Most shipping companies can supply the correct type of packaging for a small fee.

Other things may also influence the prices you have to pay and these will be the service level you require and the items final destination. Items sent on a fast same day service will be fairly costly and less urgent parcels and documents will take approximately 14 days to ship to most countries. Things can be sent to most destinations but you should make checks beforehand as a few countries may be off limits for various reasons.

After taking your parcels to the depot or having them picked up, there is some important paperwork that needs to be completed. These documents will contain all of the details of the carriage and it will have a tracking number which is important. You can use this number to log onto the carriers web site and check where your items are while they are on the move.

When shopping around to find the best prices, it is worth making a list of firms before calling. The large well established companies are a good choice but some of the smaller independent carriers may be able to help. These small businesses will use one of the larger companies to handle their shipping and will get a lower rate due to the volume of goods they send.

One benefit when using an independent firm is that you will usually have the option to pay with credit card or cash. When using one of the larger businesses, you will first need to open an account with them before they will handle any packages. If you are going to be sending items frequently, it may beneficial for you to open an account, as a better rate may be negotiated.

Prior to sending your items is imperative that they are adequately covered by the correct type of insurance. Both the large businesses, and independent couriers will have transit cover which will be suitable or you can arrange your own. If you are sourcing your own insurance you will need the value of the items to be sent before getting a price.
