By Ida Dorsey

American students know from a young age that they will have to do well at school if they want to study at any of the better colleges and universities. They also know that they will have to score well in tests specially designed to gauge their readiness for higher education. These tests can literally open or close doors for young people. Luckily, when getting ready for SAT prep Palm Beach FL students have access to some of the best tutors and materials.

When the SAT tests were introduced in the early twenties of the previous century, they were meant to determine whether a student is ready to pursue a qualification at a higher educational institution. This is still its purpose, although some changes have been made from time to time. It used to be known as the Scholastic Aptitude Test, but these days the acronym stands for nothing in particular.

Not all universities require that prospective students pass the tests. However, most of the prestigious educational institutions will not consider an application unless the applicant has scored well in the tests. These institutions have limited places available to new students and they want to protect their image and reputation for excellence. They know that every place is desperately sought after by more applicants that can ever be accommodated.

Top colleges and universities offer much more than just a superior education. Large corporations and prestigious employers regularly recruit students from these universities. Students at these institutions are also more likely to gain professional exposure by working as interns during their breaks. It is an acknowledged fact that students from top universities routinely snatch up the best jobs when they graduate.

The test itself is strenuous. It lasts for three hours and during this time students have to answer numerous questions in three main areas of interest. These areas are writing skills, critical reading and mathematics. Only a short rest between each session is allowed. Students can score a maximum of two thousand five hundred and a minimum of six hundred points.

There are official guidelines designed to help students prepare, but most also opt for one or more other sources of assistance. There are numerous books, websites and special software programs that all aim to help students do well in the test. In fact, this industry has grown into quite a large one. Students and their parents willingly pay for these aids because they consider the results to be important to the future success of the student.

When considering additional help to prepare for the test great care should be taken to purchase only materials that will actually help. There are numerous aids and books that contain little more than what is already part of the official guidelines. It may help to ask advice from experts in this field and to peruse online discussion forums to gain advice from others that have already completed the test.

There can be no doubt that these tests are important and that a good score will most certainly be of benefit to the student. Care should be taken, however to refrain from placing too much pressure on young people. Not everyone is capable of completing a demanding degree course. It is also important to remember that student that achieved an unsatisfactory score can always sit for the test again.
