A Look At Sober Greeting Cards

By Kenya Campos

When a person stops drinking or using drugs using a twelve step program they mark their progress by celebrating periods of successful sobriety. They start with smaller periods such as thirty or sixty days then there is a six month observance and switching to once a year after the first twelve months. The members of AA and NA use sober greeting cards as a permanent means for celebrants to remember these bench marks in their recovery.

Finding an appropriate card or memento in stores can be a difficult task for most and the people who act as sponsors for new comers can spend a lot of time searching for the right card. Part of any recovery process includes monthly birthday meetings that celebrate the anniversaries of their first day in sobriety. This policy is thought to be a mainstay in helping people stay sober and this inspires those sponsors and friends to try to find a personalized card or gift for those they care about.

A quick internet search can provide you with the websites of numerous companies who offer these mementos for individuals or groups. There are groups in AA and NA who frequent these businesses to supply all of their meeting needs. They can purchase items in large or small numbers and in many cases personalize the messages inside each card.

A few websites offer specialty series items such as the Humpty-Dumpty series. Others have an open forum where recovering artists can list their artwork and show their creative sides to the public. Nearly all offer items that can be personalized by the purchaser.

Using sites that will provide an E-card for someone special is another option. It will be sent to the e-mail address you provide for delivery and you can schedule the delivery in advance if you choose to do so. There are also companies that will mail the card you select to the person you designate.

The personal experiences of the creators of these cards play a large part in their content. Because many artists are themselves recovering from some form of addiction they have intimate knowledge of what holds the most meaning and is pertinent to continued recovery. Most owners of these companies are in recovery also and are inclined to hire other recovering people to work with them.

The owners of many of these companies announce on the website that they too are recovering alcoholics and addicts and because one foundation to staying sober is to stay in service they view their contributions as a form of service. Their inventory usually contains other items that are important to recovery such as AA Big Books and yearly medallions to celebrate birthdays and anniversaries. Some suppliers offer the option of selecting or creating the card package you want and then picking it up within an hour at a nearby printer or retail store.

When in recovery it is a special event when someone remembers your special days and when those days are remembered with a card or other gift or memento it becomes even more memorable.
