As an IT worker you will need to have lots of skills to be successful. The top five skills you will need I order to be successful are listed below;

Communication is very important. Whether you are a consultant, contractor or IT employee you will need to have excellent communication skills. Try to stand out from the crowd by listening well and displaying good levels of conversation.

Every IT role requires analysis. Whether you are working on a help desk, software development, systems architecture or general support you will need good analytical skills. The skills that mean you can look at a scenario and break it down into smaller tasks in order to solve it are essential.

You will need good written skills. You need to be able to convey your message effectively and accurately. Working in IT requires sending lots of emails and documenting your work. Basic spelling and grammar levels should be easy for IT workers to reach. You will need to be able to explain things to lots of different people so having good written English is essential.

Self-management skills are essential when you work in IT. You will realise as your career progresses that you will become responsible for managing your own time. You will spend less time asking your manager questions and for help and more time resolving problems on your own. If you've got work to do you will need to decide what is priority and what isn't.

You will need to perform well under stress. IT can potentially be a very stressful industry to work in. If you want to be a success you will have to learn how to manage stress and delegate work to others. This is an important skill and will come with time.
