Have you ever tried to perform a local job search and couldn't find any legitimate job openings within a reasonable distance of your location? That seems to be a common flaw with some job search websites.
All websites function differently, so you have to choose which ones to use at your own discretion. Some are very specific with the search criteria and categories. Others only let you input certain information.
When performing a local job search, the more broad options can be pretty detrimental to your search. I've come across some job search websites that were showing jobs that matched my criteria within 50 miles of my specified location. Clearly, these jobs were not ideal as I was living in the suburbs and relied on public transportation.
I prefer to use job search tools that allow me to specify in very precise terms what I prefer and what I am not looking for. This isn't always possible with some of the websites out there.
When I ran into these kinds of problems in the past, I would check out the local newspapers and classifieds. However, not all local businesses advertised in the local media. So I continued to have trouble.
Thankfully, since then, many of these job search websites have enhanced their search options. Their distance variables aren't as broad as they used to be, which helps out so much with a local job search.
It's not just the distance criteria that need improvements. Many of these websites have expanded all the categories in all available criteria. There was a time when I could only choose from a handful of job categories, and this of course doesn't make much sense.
It'll be interesting to see what other enhancements appear in the near future. I know many of these websites have yet to improve other search options as well as add new categories to their menus.
