How Moss Damage The Roof?

By Scott Rodgers

Those who says that moss does not cause harm to your roof is ignorant of the fact that moss is a living thing and any living beings needs food to grow and hence they need food to eat. The same thing mosses do.

The moss can be eliminated in a very simple way. If you have some handy tools with a good moss cleaning product than you can eliminate the moss on your own.

To remove the moss from your roof do not use bleach or chlorine based products, as it will though kill the moss but with that it will also prove harmful for your home. These harmful products are not structured to stick to arena roofs; they wipe equally and generally leave behind marks on the roof shingles or tile.

Along with staining your roof, these chlorine based products contain strong chemicals that severely dry out your roofing material, causing cracking and making your roofing material susceptible to wind damage. These types of hazardous products may also kill any plant, shrub or section of lawn as it runs off of the roof.

There are products designed specially to clean moss from roofs, a good product will be designed to stick to even the steepest pitched roof while attacking the roots of the moss. A good roof washing product should be environmentally safe so that it will not harm your yard, it should also be a non-staining product.

It is necessary to wipe out the moss from the root, hence always choose a good moss cleaning product which will directly hit the roots of the moss. It would be better if a garden style pump sprayer is used to remove the moss and to clean the roof.

The best method to clean the moss is to brush the moss off with the help of a medium bristle scrub brush. You have to only brush the moss when it is damped with a roof moss cleaning product. With this method the roots of the moss will easily come off.

If you brush the roof moss in dry state and using wrong product, then only the flower of the moss will be removed and the moss will start to bloom soon after. So wash properly the roof after the moss has been cleared with a brush. It would be better if you apply one more coat of roof cleaner after washing the roof and allow it to stay on the roof.
