Senator Ted Kennedy Is Poised To Work On Health Care Reform

By Ethan Kalvin

As the Boston Globe reports, Senator Kennedy has been a strong supporter of universal health care. And now Kennedy's vision is more likely to come to fruition, since the Democrats hold a commanding control in the Senate, the House of Representatives, and the White House.

Kennedy has chosen to step down as chair of the Judiciary Committee to concentrate all his energies as chair of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee. He feels this is the opportunity of a lifettime and now that the Democrats have power positions in the House, Senate and White House, the next two years may likely see some significant health care reforms.

The public can expect to see a never-before-seen effort to sway public opinion, and possibly a few Senate Republicans will be swayed as well. There will likely be strong movement toward universal health care and heavy regulations for the health insurance industry.

Expect to see a never-before-seen effort to sway public opinion and one (or two) Senate Republicans to the Democrats side for universal health insurance, universal access to health care for all, and heavy regulations on the health insurance industry.

Like we've said before, there's little or no chance of the United States ever switching to a single-payer health care system, but mandated health insurance and heavy regulation on health insurance companies is more likely then ever before.
