Okay, you know you are smart and have some skills, but you are still frustrated and spinning your wheels. Do you feel like you are not even tapping your full potential? That you try and try and are not really getting anywhere?
If this describes you, don't be too hard on yourself. For one thing, it's not just you. Tens of millions of people in the United States are in the same boat. We know, however, that there are also many many successful and goal-oriented individuals who are successful.
Goal setting has to be a way of life and you can change your life and give it a new found sense of meaning and purpose. To do this you will have to change your habits and develop some new skills.
Not all the difficulties you are having right now will stem from ineffective goal setting, but most of them may if you take the time to examine where your dissatisfaction comes from. And even if it sounds simple, the problem can be solved if you learn how to achieve your goals and "walk the walk" instead of just "talk the talk".
For instance, the person who continues to have financial difficulty may have the honest goal to get out of debt. However, they have failed to achieve their goal because they haven't taken the steps necessary to get out of debt.
If you can figure out how you want your life to be different, then you can make path from where you are now to where (and how) you want to be. Write this down, be descriptive. Then write out each step you will have to take to get you to your goal. Make smaller steps if one step seems to much for you to do.
A specific time frame is also important to achieve your goals. Goal-oriented people do not just set a time line for their ultimate goal, they also set a time frame for each individual step they have to take to reach their goal. For example, write down "July 30th, 2011" instead of "Summer 2011".
As stated above, goal setting is a skill and can develop into a habit. If you take the time to do these two steps and apply them to one area of your life, you are on your way of taking charge of your life.
